Before You Call
Useful Homeowner Checks Before You Schedule Service
A few safe checks can help you rule out simple issues, understand what changed, and know when the next step belongs in a professional visit rather than more guessing.
Straight Guidance
Keep The First Checks Practical
Start simple
Filters, thermostat settings, and the clearest symptoms are still the best first checks.
Do not force it
If the system is acting strangely, repeatedly resetting, or feels unsafe, it is time to stop guessing.
Make the service call clearer
The best outcome is clearer context for the visit, not trying to out-repair the system.
Safe First Steps
What homeowners can reasonably check first
Start with the thermostat, the filter, whether the system still starts and runs, and whether the complaint is whole-home or room-specific.
Those basics often make the service conversation more productive even when the issue still needs professional diagnosis.
Ice Check
If cooling is weak, shut the system off and look for ice
Turn the cooling system off first. Then look for ice on the refrigerant lines near the outdoor unit, around the indoor coil area, or on the copper lines near the furnace or air handler.
Ice can point to airflow trouble, low refrigerant, a dirty coil, or another issue that needs proper diagnosis. Leave cooling off, run fan-only mode if the thermostat allows it, and call before turning cooling back on.
- Do not chip ice off the lines or coil.
- Do not keep running cooling while the system is frozen.
- Call for service if ice is present, if it comes back, or if airflow is weak.
